Brought to the White House to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Broadway legend George M. Cohan (James Cagney) reflects on his life. As Cohan modestly accepts the medal, FDR assures him of the value of his contributions to the nation, especially as the writer of patriotic songs like “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Over There.” As Cohan leaves the Oval Office, he greets the White House ushers, tap dances down the stairs, and joins in a parade. Cagney at his best, in the role for which he won an Oscar.
