Tracking shots are continuous shots with no cuts. They need to be precisely planned and executed. They’re a kind of choreography involving two subjects, where the one needs to work in conjunction with the partner. The best example of a tracking shot is The Russian Ark, a full-length movie with not cuts. What a nightmare that must have been to shoot. The example here is from an excellent series called True Detective on HBO. The set up involves Matthew McConaughey grabbing a gang leader and dragging him to his partner’s waiting automobile, all through a battle between the white motorcycle gang and the black drug dealers.
